Lately, I have been trying out project ideas. I am kind of an odd bird when it comes to things that I have for hobbies, including sewing. I own my own sewing machine, in fact. It was a gift from my grandmother, Nan. She gave it to me when I started college. When I was young, after my parents’ divorce, I would spend my days with my Nan and Pop while my mom was at work. Great memories. Nan was a very skilled seamstress, and taught me the basics of using a sewing needle, and eventually I was promoted to using the machine as well.
I’m still not very skilled, but I am trying out new things lately, including making a carrying case for my cajon that I built over Christmas break. My latest projects have been three attempts at leather sleeves for my iPhone and a friend’s smartphone. The first turned out better than the second, but I will try again and keep learning. I got some great materials to use at the Goodwill - an old leather purse (I cut all of the leather panels out of it to practice with), and a really cool patterned plaid shirt. I got both of them for less than $10, which I thought was a pretty sweet deal, beside the fact that I am attempting to reclaim them for new uses.
My next project, besides trying another cell phone case for my friend, is to use the shirt to make a zipper pouch for my iPad. I’ve yet to conceptualize exactly what this will look like, but I have some cool ideas in my head that I would like to try. i think I have enough fabric or at least two cases.
If you have something you’d like for me to attempt to make for you, let me know, and I’ll see if I have the guts to attempt it. I may need for you to provide the materials if it’s something I don’t have, but it would be good practice for me. If you have any requests or would like to commission my services, send them my way!
